Gestures

The tradition of gesturing is undeniably Italian; Italians use about 250 hand gestures in everyday conversation.  But when and where did gestures originate and how did the system of gestures develop? These are the most important points that Hannah Roberts, the Daily Mail correspondent, highlighted in the article.
It is mentioned that the great amount of gestures originated in Naples. Also we can learn that gestures were developed by Italians as a secret language of communication during centuries of foreign occupation — by Austria, France and Spain in the 14th through 19th centuries. In busy cities like Naples, gesturing was a way of marking one’s territory. Gestures generally include fingers flying horizontally from the chin, exaggerated shrugs and upheld palms, and lots of exasperated cries and raised eyebrows.
In my turn, I would like to say that the knowing of gestures is very important for people. If you know it, you almost know the main part of the different nation culture; you will be understood by people in different countries and will use gestures properly. This article can be useful for those people who interested in gestures and its origin.
At the end I’d like to ask you questions: do you think it’s important to know gestures and do you often use them in your everyday life?

  1. It is a very interesting article. Few people know that the language of gestures originates precisely in Italy. And we know that the Italians are very impulsive and emotional people and this is their human nature. As for me it was interesting to learn that the language of gestures in 14-19 centuries were used as a secret language in the period of occupation by Austria, France and Spain.
There are many theories which reveals the true values of gestures. I think we need to know what the different gestures mean for recognizing that man wanted to say, and even to recognize is it true or false .

  2. This article pays attention to the problem of significance of non-verbal communication. The use of gestures paves the way for learning speech. Before a child can vocalize, they have the ability to understand language and communicate through deictic and iconic gestures.
Throughout our day-to-day activities, we constantly make gestures as we speak and converse, usually unconsciously. But in many cases we should control and pay a lot of attention to our gestures. In mastering the art of public speaking, a seemingly simple nuance like gestures plays a large role. Moreover learning of usage of gestures in different cultures is very important, especially for those people, who have business with international partners, because different gestures have different meanings.

  4. First of all, thank you for your article! You gave to us a very interesting information about gestures, I didn't know their origin and I can't imagine that the Italians use about 250 hand gestures in everyday conversation! It's unbelievable!
I think, that gestures are a very important thing in our life, because a person, who just talk without any gestures seems to me lifeless. But it's also important to know the language of gestures, because in different countries the same gesture can lead to different consequence. For example, the gesture 'thumbs up' in USA means "Super, cool, etc.", but in Australia this gesture means insult. So, we should use gestures very accurate in different countries.
As for me, I use gestures very much, especially when I’m nervous. It helps me to calm down sometimes.

  5. Thanks for choosing this article. It is very entertaining. Gestures are a form of non-verbal communication, which we use every day in our life.
From early childhood we use different gestures to show what we want or to impress our emotions. They often help us to illustrate our words in the moment of speaking.
This article learns us to pay attention to different meanings of one gesture in different parts of our world. If you don't know meanings of gestures, you can offend a person when you never dreamed of insulting him. Because of this, I believe that it is very important to learn gestures of people from different countries, especially if you are going to visit inhabitants. Before going you should compare meanings of gestures and practice it, because you have to control your temper.
Politicians, journalists, teachers should use gestures in a very accurate way, because it can prevent clear awarenesses of they. Moreover, gestures can show when a person tells lies or the truth.
I often begin gesticulating while I am talking, but I try to keep my gestures under control.
